Does smoking weed permanently diminish your short-term memory, or is it just during the high?

I ask this because there are facts all over the internet on what smoking weed does too your intellectual abilities as well as your physical abilities. While they all say this though, none of them ever say if it is just the side-effect of smoking it and it goes away after a couple hours or is ur memory “permanently” damaged for life? Or does it damage but your brain rebuilds itself over a period of time?

It may not be permanent but it can well be long-term. It is not just when you are under the influence.

i think that it has some long-term effects that are more noticable during the high.

  17. ugh192 says:

I used to be a casual smoker of the stuff, and at the time, yes, I would forget everything. But I am back to normal. And as a side note, alcohol will mess you up way worse.

  18. Telescope Eyes says:

I am someone who has read up a lot of actual research unlike a lot of these people on here answering this question who apparently don’t know anything about the subject. No it does not kill brain cells and has not been proven to permanently diminish memory (and if someone says it’s so because of that monkey study done in the 70s or whatever, they haven’t read up on more recent research and criticisms of that past study). If you are a heavy user it will affect your short term memory but once you’ve not used for a while it’ll come back.

  19. #1con says:

What was the question? I forgot. Actually it can remain for a few days or a few weeks. The brain cells you damage and kill can never rejuvenate or grow back.

  20. Usaneko says:

I have bad short term memory, and I’ve always had it, regardless of my smoking. There are also sites out there that show how marijuana is actually healthy and was used before Europeans took over as medication for various illnesses. As far as I know, any physical side effects are apparent only during the high, I know lots of people, athletes and otherwise, who smoke on a regular basis, and they’re fine. Don’t believe all the bad rumours going around about marijuana, it doesn’t hurt you nearly as bad as anti-depressants, allergy medications, or even advil. Enjoy.

  21. Heather C says:

Ok. After smoking weed, it is present, testably, in your bloodstream for 30 days. For 14 days, providing you smoke no more during those 14 days, you may still experience other lapses of memory, sluggishness, etc. If you continue without using, there should be few side effects.
    I hope this helps.

  22. calebrules1991 says:

In the first place, weed kills, and it is illegal, so don’t use it.

Smoking it will harm you a high percentage of the time.

  23. Robert S says:

Taking any foreign poisonous substance into your body,
does permanent damage to cell structures somewhere.
This is also true with prescription drugs, by the way.
Smoking (anything) gets into your lungs, blood, & brain.
Alchohol gets through intestines into blood-stream too.
This all kills off brain cells & breaks memory connections.
The effect is permanent, once brain cells are lost.

  24. Amanda L says:

The active ingredient in weed is THC. Although it is fat soluable and stays in your system for about 4 weeks, the chemical does not actively deteriorate your brain when you smoke it, nor does it continue to do so until your fat cells purge it out of your body. The most damage it does to your body is related to the actual smoking of it…i.e. smoking anything isn’t good for your lungs, it raises blood pressure and so forth.

  25. ixi26c says:

Many people are taught things about marijuana that are incorrect, but don’t do any research to back up these “facts.” It really scares me to see all your responses and how incredibly wrong they are.

Here is the whole truth (I was a psychopharmacology student in college):

Marijuana does NOT HAVE ANY LONG-TERM OR PERMANENT SIDE EFFECTS WHATSOEVER.

IT DOES NOT KILL BRIAN CELLS…ALCOHOL DOES.

It only diminishes your memory when you are under the influence of the drug, just as any drug does.

“Potheads” are people who are constantly high, therefore, they don’t seem very intelligent because they are continually impaired.

It is the safest natural psychoactive substance in existence.

    You’re fine.

  26. heart broKen says:

I smoked ALOT of weed for years and for the past few years I smoke moderately.. I have absolutly horrible long and short-term memory.. Ex- If you asked me what I did last Saturday I would have to think very long and hard about it and probably still woodnt be able to tell you.. I am a college student and on the Dean’s List.. so it has not effected my academic life.. but it does put a damper on other aspects of my life..

  27. Legalize not Legal Lies says:

NO dont listen to the people that tel you permantly. But while your high you might experiance a little memory trouble if your begginning. It can also highten your memory if you try hard enough because you can think more cleary about whatever you want to usually.
