Smoking is a practice whereby a substance, most commonly tobacco, is burned and the smoke tasted or inhaled. This is primarily done as a form of consumption of recreational drugs, such as combustion releases the active drug substances such as nicotine and makes them available for absorption by the lungs. It can also be done as part of rituals, induce trances and spiritual enlightenment. Health warnings on tobacco products in Australia have been mandated by federal law since 1973, updated in 1987 and 1995. In cigarette burns, the residues are concentrated towards the heel. The fact that smoking causes problems for the heart arteries is not surprising when you consider that smoking has been shown that: • Increase the bad cholesterol (LDL) • Low good cholesterol (HDL) • Resistance to insulin increases • Cigarettes are loaded with “free radicals” that “oxidation” LDL cholesterol.
